Ifá and Yoruba religion in Nigeria and Benin

The oracle of Ifá, Orunmilá and the place of Yoruba religion in West Africa.

Ifá

Documented historyIfá is an African oracle consulted in divination, originating among the Yoruba of Nigeria. It is called Fa among the Fon and Afa among the Jeje. According to the source consulted, it is not, strictly speaking, an Orixá, but the spokesperson of Orunmilá and the other Orixás.

Documented historyThe source consulted records the inscription of the Ifá divination system on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.

Documented historyThe system uses 16 principal odus, formed by combinations of single and double marks.

Yorubaland

Documented historyYoruba religion extends across southwestern Nigeria, southeastern Benin and, to a lesser extent, south-central Togo. Its creation myths vary: in some, the world's creator is Obatalá; in others, Odudua.

The UNESCO source

Documented historyUNESCO describes Ifá as a system of signs interpreted by priests with knowledge passed down through tradition. It reports a corpus of 256 odus, subdivided into verses called ese. Each part has a divinatory signature; the whole is not limited to a simple table of answers.

Documented historyThe institution reports proclamation in 2005 and inscription on the Representative List in 2008. Its text distinguishes this system from forms based on mediumship. This prevents all oracles, the casting of sixteen búzios and a digital simulation from being called by the same name.

Belief / interpretationWe do not present the verses, signatures or methods as a consultation manual. Public information situates the tradition and the value of transmission, without exposing restricted foundations or granting religious qualification.
